Volkl Mantra Review
The Volkl Mantra is one of the classic all-mountain skis. With the Mantra name stretching all the way back to 2004, it’s a powerful, stiff and supremely stable ski that works in all conditions. With a Sensorwood core, vertical sidewalls and a titanium layer to add strength, the 2012/2013 Mantra is totally at home cutting long fast lines on icy groomers and through chopped-up crud. Its 132 – 98 – 113mm profile gives it sufficient sidecut for a 25.8m turn radius at 184cm length, and the vertical sidewalls and largely traditional camber setup give it great grip on hard snow. In powder meanwhile, the rocker tip and 98mm width underfoot means it has excellent flotation. In short, it’s a “one-quiver” ski for those who like to ski hard and fast all over the mountain.
- Superb grip on-piste
- Excellent float off-piste
- A do-it-all, go-anywhere ski for all conditions
- Not great on moguls
- Needs to be skied aggressively to get the best out of it
